2014 DJ MAG TOP 100
So again, everyone is moaning about the DJ Mag Top 100. So yes now, it’s hyped to fuck but it probably still does represent the loves of the age group who vote for it most-17-23 year olds and so was thinking- if there HAD been a poll in 1985, it would have been topped by Robbie Vincent, Greg Edwards, Chris Hill(probably the UK’s first ever superstar DJ,) , Jeff Young, Steve Walsh,Martin Collins, Tony Blackburn (sorry but true!) Carl Cox & Pete Tong. Froggy, Giles Gilles Peterson, Tony Monson, James Hamilton and the good Dr Bob Jones, and maybe even me somewhere as I had a soul show on Capital FM (london), resident 6 nights a week at Guillivers, a regular on the Radio London Soul Night Out and Channel 4’s Soul Train and singles reviewer for Blues & Soul) This 85 poll is based on the fact it was pre internet and a UK mag and the top 10 in 97 ( the first ever top 100 poll) was an all British Top 10, Cox, Oaky, Sasha, Jules, De Vit, Tong, Rampling, Hype, Grooverider & Healey.) I wonder what would the voters of 85 (who would have been dancing to Joyce Simms, Roy Ayers, Mantronix, SOS band etc etc) would have said about the 97 top ten dj’s in the 97 poll for playing trance, techno & drum and bass (or Jungle). MAYBE what we are saying now about Hardwell etc is what the soul purists would have said also-OK WE SAY (KNOW) what were playing back in 97 WAS AWESOME but would the soul purists have agreed with that? And honestly Pete & Carl would deffo have been in both!! And great to see Carl at least still in it-if this was next year (2015) then he would have graced the poll for 3 decades-AWESOME!!
And then I thoug what about if there had been a pol in 1978- it would be the same as the 85 one I made up, except for maybe Coxy whose place would have been taken for sure by Froggy or Sean French or Big Tom Holland or Owen Washington or Chris Brown!! Just thoughts!!
